The FIFA World Cup 2026 kicks off on Thu/ June 11/ 2026/ and concludes with the Final on Sun/ Jul 19/ 2026. The tournament will be hosted by three nations: the United States/ Canada/ and Mexico for the first time in history. Matches will be spread across 16 iconic host cities throughout North America.
The 2026 tournament marks the biggest expansion in World Cup history. It grows from 32 teams to 48 popular nations. The teams are divided into 12 groups of 4. The top two teams from each group along with the 8 best third place finishers. It will advance to a new Round of 32 knockout stage.
The final match on Jul 19 will be played at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford/ New Jersey (rebranded as the New York New Jersey Stadium for the tournament to comply with FIFA’s corporate name policies). The massive venue boasts a capacity of over 82,500 fans.
The tournament features staggered initial days for each home country because there are three co-hosts:
Mexico: June 11 at the historic Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.
Canada: June 12 at the Toronto Stadium (BMO Field).
United States: June 12 at the Los Angeles Stadium (SoFi Stadium).
Three countries are banned by FIFA in the 2026 World Cup due to current suspensions and geopolitical sanctions:
Russia: Banned from all FIFA and UEFA competitions due to the geopolitical sanctions.
Pakistan: Suspended due to administrative failures and the government's failure to adopt a revised constitution. It ensures free and fair elections for its football federation.
Congo: Excluded due to unlawful third party interference in the management of the Congolese Football Federation.
